What is a Coreless Motor?
A coreless motor is a type of electric motor that does not have an iron core in its rotor. Instead, it uses a winding made of a thin wire that is wound around a cylindrical tube. This design eliminates the iron core, making the motor lighter and more efficient.
There are several benefits of using a coreless motor compared to brushed or brushless motors:
1. Higher Power-to-Weight Ratio
Coreless motors have a higher power-to-weight ratio compared to brushed or brushless motors. This means that they can deliver more power while being lighter in weight. This makes them ideal for applications where weight is a critical factor, like in Electric Files!
In eFile terms, if two eFiles have the same torque, the coreless handset will be able to access more of that torque due to the fact that the handset is lighter and easier to rotate owing to the lack of an iron core.
2. Faster Response Time
Due to their lower inertia, coreless motors have a faster response time compared to brushed or brushless motors. This means that they can quickly accelerate or decelerate, making them suitable for applications that require precise control.
3. Smoother Operation
Coreless motors provide smoother operation compared to brushed or brushless motors. This is because they have less cogging, which refers to the jerky motion that can occur in motors with an iron core. The smooth operation of coreless motors makes them ideal for applications that require high precision and low vibration, such as camera gimbals, optical equipment, dental drills & eFiles. The reduction of vibration is not only vital to the accuracy of your work, but makes holding the handset for extended periods even more comfortable.
4. Longer Lifespan
Coreless motors have a longer lifespan compared to brushed or brushless motors. This is because they have fewer moving parts, reducing the chances of mechanical failure. Additionally, the absence of an iron core eliminates the risk of core saturation, which can lead to motor damage. The longer lifespan of coreless motors makes them even more cost-effective in the long run.
Conclusion
While there are very good brushed, brushless and coreless motors available and each has its benefits - the newer, more modern design of a coreless motor combats some of the age-old issues that brushed and brushless eFile handsets have always held. Weight, vibration, power reserves, efficiency and, importantly, cost effectiveness.
At the nail lab, we have two coreless eFile models, both available in black or white.
We have the super sleek, hybrid Fusion eFile - works as both a desktop and portable eFile meaning it can be used while plugged or unplugged.
